Open letter for the freedom of political prisoners in Chile and Wallmapu!
Currently more than 2,500 people are political prisoners of the Revolt. They have not been convicted of any crime, but the Chilean state has decided to keep them in prison because it considers them “a danger to society”. The political prisoners include trans people, minors and Mapuche community members who were taken prisoner before and during the social upheaval. (Check more info about). SIGN BELLOW TO SUPPORT Mr. Sebastián Piñera Echeñique, President of the Republic of Chile Along with greeting you, we would like to express our deep concern about the current precarious situation of 2,500 political prisoners in Chile, who are in pretrial detention and cannot comply with the necessary health measures to prevent COVID-19 infection. Therefore, we urgently request for these people the change of preventive precautionary measures to house arrest. Deadline: July 12th, 2020
These arbitrary and illegitimate detentions, which occurred as repressive response by the Chilean government. These detentions were during and after the peaceful demonstrations in Chile and also in defense of the Wallmapu territory.
Therefore we present this open letter and we request to the responsible the to free the political prisoners of Chile and Wallmapu, and to allow them to carry out the precautionary measure in their homes, together with their families, all in order to safeguard their lives in this pandemic.
Open Letter:
Mr. Guillermo Silva Gundelach, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
Mr. Jorge Abott Charme, National Prosecutor of the Public Ministry
Present
The report of the Judicial Prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Chile states that the current overcrowding in the country’s prisons has become a time bomb. The release of political prisoners would reduce the current overcrowding and comply with the established health measures, which would help prevent new positive cases of COVID-19, as proposed in the reports of health authorities and specialists in the country. If we do not comply with optimal hygiene measures, physical distancing and quarantine, we will have to regret more deaths than we already do today.
From abroad, we see with great concern the current situation of political prisoners, who we believe receive massive and disproportionate sanctions, which only seek to criminalize social and political conflict, giving unfair treatment to those who fight for the guarantees of social rights. In addition, we wish to highlight our concern about the discriminatory treatment of those who are in preventive detention, including Mapuche citizens, LGTBQ+ members, and even minors who are under arrest, the latter being one of the most vulnerable groups even before the social revolt.
That is why, through this letter, we request that urgent and effective measures be taken to free the political prisoners of Chile and Wallmapu, who are currently in pretrial detention, and to order that they be allowed to continue to carry out the precautionary measure in their homes, together with their families, all in order to safeguard their lives.
